CBD Cannabidiol From the List of Prohibited Substances
10World Anti Doping Agency (or WADA for short) has decided to remove CBD oil from the 2018 list of prohibited substances.
As usual, the agency has decided to publish the list of changes they’ve introduced. This year’s report includes newly-added substances as well as the removal of CBD oil and Glycerol oil, both of which were previously classified as prohibited.
Glycerol oil is commonly used to improve an athlete’s endurance as well as keeping him hydrated. CBD oil, a compound derived from cannabis, is used to treat the symptoms of inflammation as well as making the recovery period easier.
WADA’s official explanation states that synthetic cannabidiol is not a cannabimimetic. Therefore, it’s no longer prohibited. On the other hand, cannabidiol extracted from cannabis plants is known to contain varying concentrations of THC, which, as a substance, remains prohibited.
Surprisingly, many athletes are completely unaware of what CBD oil actually does and why it was even prohibited in the first place. Much to the surprise of some, our bodies tend to produce their own cannabinoids naturally. The following two main cannabinoid receptors are found within our bodies: CB1 and CB2.
CBD oil does not impact these directly, but it does have a role in influencing the cannabinoid production in our bodies. In concrete terms, this leads to increased pain management, and the oils also have some anti-inflammatory properties.
Due to these reasons, several athletes are using CBD oil. It can be used orally, inhaled, or even applied topically.
