Minnesota – allowed marijuana usage and limitations

The state of Minnesota considers marijuana to be a controlled substance, which means you can run into quite a few problems with the local law enforcement if you’re caught possessing, distributing, or selling it. While recreational use of marijuana is banned in Minnesota, it’s still possible for one to get a medical marijuana license, allowing for legal consumption of it (with severe limitations).

In these cases, even something as small as 2 grams of marijuana could get you in significant trouble; up to 90 days of prison time and up to $1,000 in fines. The only exception to the rule is if you’ve got in stored in the trunk.

Selling or distributing marijuana in Minnesota is a huge no-no, especially if you’re trying to sell it near a park or a school – in such instances, the penalties can get quite severe.

If there are any traces of it in your bloodstream, you can be fined up to $1,000 and serve up to 90 days in prison. First-time offenders get their drivers license suspended for half a year. Growing your own pot in Minnesota is a felony, so don’t even think about it. A single plant is enough to get you convicted. This goes even for medical marijuana license holders, so don’t think that will help your case in court. In some cases, you even risk losing your entire house via asset forfeiture procedures. When it comes to determining the severity of the sentence for marijuana cultivation in Minnesota, your previous criminal history does play a role, and if minors were able to access it at any point, you could be looking at additional jail time.
