Who’s Who of Cannabis: “Dr. Sacha”

By Madison Miller

LA WEEKLY

Once Larry King lays a nickname on you, it sticks – just ask “Dr. Sacha,” his longtime friend, and business associate. Dr. Sacha Nemcov is a Hollywood psychotherapist, turned cannabis advocate and entrepreneur. Dr. Sacha received his nickname from Larry King for being one of the pioneers of the movement in Southern California to provide safe access to medical cannabis in accordance with Proposition 215, the Compassionate Use Act, passed by the people of California in 1996.

A powerful advocate for mainstreaming medical marijuana and beloved by numerous Hollywood celebrities for almost a decade, all-the-while maintaining his privacy, Dr. Sacha decided to come forward following a controversial appellate court case he was entangled in, following a October 2017 issue of USA Today about marijuana churches in America.

In the piece, Larry King takes journalist Dorian Keyes to visit Dr. Sacha at his private practice in Beverly Hills. On the wall is countless photos of celebrities Dr. Sacha helped acquire their first letter of recommendation for the use of medical marijuana. Though no longer a novelty since California’s Prop 64 legalized the adult use of cannabis, many cannabis users still keep their expired letters as a souvenir.

Dr. Sacha has come a long way since being a junior intern at Cedars Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles. He was inadvertently thrust into the world of medical marijuana in 2009. A close friend approached him, knowing he is always one to help. He had bad news, having been recently diagnosed with prostate cancer. Now, he was having serious trouble holding down the chemo pills. Dr. Sacha spent countless nights researching at USC’s Norris Medical Library with very little information available. This was during a time when medical school curriculums did not include cannabis and only a limited amount of studies were available; most of which were empirical or inconclusive. His friend learned that medical marijuana might be the only way for him to hold down the pills. Despite great efforts, he was unable to find a physician in Southern California who would even discuss medical marijuana as an option. Everyone was afraid of losing their medical license. Ironically, the few physicians who did write prescriptions for marijuana, were also not comfortable providing guidance as to what dosage one should take and unknowing of the potential side effects.

Eventually, Dr. Sacha found a physician in the San Francisco Bay Area who was amenable to the subject. They flew to Northern California to meet him. Not only were his friend’s medical needs addressed, but Dr. Sacha was able to convince the physician to open up his practice in L.A. one day per week. However, there was a catch – Dr. Sacha would have to run the location, and handle all of the business and administrative matters.

He agreed, and the first medical marijuana physician’s office in Beverly Hills was born. The demand was huge and within nine months he had helped 6 physicians open up their own offices.

California is the largest legal “weed” market in the world; making it easy for Californians to take for granted the easy access to a wide range of marijuana products. But medical marijuana patients need their medicine – and even today marijuana still cannot be found at local pharmacies – only “dispensaries.”

In addition to consulting with countless Hollywood celebrities, politicians, and entertainment executives, Dr. Sacha has consulted for many dispensaries and businesses in California and across the country, including Oregon, Illinois, Florida and Massachusetts to pass the strenuous statewide permitting process. Among his many professional accomplishments, he has helped launch a “Nugs For Needles” compassion program in San Francisco, which provides free cannabis for the homeless, in exchange for drug needles.

Since stepping into the spotlight in 2013, Dr. Sacha has become a household name in the cannabis industry. “Over the past decade, I have seen the industry grow to astronomical levels. I just hope that the work that I and others have done will help those who truly need it. Whether it is for someone battling cancer, or an adult who simply wants to enjoy nature’s healing plant”.

Cannabis Oil – a miracle cure for agonizing eczema?

676

Cheryl Halliburton, a 27-year-old mum suffering from severe eczema, discovered cannabis oil, a miracle cure for her problems.

At a certain point in her life, her skin woes got so out of hand that she had to seek medical treatment for it. At her wit’s end, she tried other ways of treating her condition, which includes inhaling cannabis oil through a vape pen. As luck would have it, it worked!

Ever since getting pregnant at 23 years old, her condition would go out of hand every so often. Every couple of days, her skin would flare up, and what she ate that day determined the severity of the situation. On certain days, it was so bad that she was unable to leave the house because of it.

After her dad suggested her to try CBD oil, her skin cleared up in two weeks, and there have been no flare-ups ever since. At first, she tried ingesting it in liquid form, but since the taste was not exactly to her liking, she moved on to inhaling it through a vape pen.

Reportedly, she is now also able to eat certain things she wasn’t able to eat before due to it having agitated her skin condition. Now, she can eat bread and drink wine without problems.

CBD (cannabidiol) is one of the main ingredients present in medical marijuana. Cannabis oil is also used to treat other medical conditions, including sleep problems, Alzheimer’s, epilepsy, low appetite, and mental health problems.

War Vets Seeking Legal Access to Medical Marijuana

9

The results of a new survey indicate that the vast majority of war veterans want to have legal access to medical marijuana without being treated as criminals.

In concrete terms, 82% of them want marijuana as a federally-legal treatment, while 92% of them support medical research on marijuana and its health benefits. The survey was commissioned by the American Legion, and the group represents more than 2.4 million military veterans. The majority of these veterans were 60 years old or more.

The survey took place on the 8th of October and lasted for two days. There were 1,360 respondents, and 802 of them identified themselves as veterans or their caregivers.

Looking at additional results of the survey, it was revealed that 40% live in a state where it is legal to use marijuana for medical purposes. 22% of them are using marijuana themselves in order to alleviate the symptoms of a mental or a physical condition. And 78% of them do not use marijuana at all.

According to the group’s resolution, more than 50% of states in the union have passed medical marijuana laws to this date. The American Legion urges the government to allow for medical use of marijuana among war veterans. The group, along with several other marijuana advocates, also want to encourage more research being done. The survey has a 95% confidence level.

A study on how marijuana affects PTSD sufferers has been prevented from reaching veterans at the Arizona VA Hospital in Phoenix. According to what the Legion wrote to the Secretary David Shulkin last month, 50 more participants are needed in the study. According to them, Phoenix VA is in a great position to assist. The Legion asked for his immediate attention and that the critical research be fully enabled.

The survey conducted by the group came to the conclusion that 92% of war veterans are in favor of supporting medical research on the health benefits of marijuana. During the conference in which the Legion released the survey’s results, several Congress members had a speech.

Congressman Matt Gaetz believes the Legion’s advocacy on the issue is very significant, and he believes it will help convince an increasing number of lawmakers to support the policy change. He also took a critical stance towards the words of Chris Christie, the governor of New Jersey, who compared cannabis laws to overprescription of opioids.

Gaetz believes these words were inaccurate, shortsighted, and that it is indefensible to suggest that the proliferation of medical cannabis can be compared to the opioid crisis, further strengthening his point by mentioning that cannabis is not only improving the quality of our lives, but also saving them.

He was also successful in predicting that the House Judiciary Committee, which he is also a member of, is planning on holding a hearing on expanding marijuana research by the end of the current year.

Last week, a group consisting of ten House Democrats wrote a letter to the VA, expressing a desire to expand medical research on marijuana.

Medical Marijuana Proven As Effective Treatment For Seizures & Chemotherapy Nausea Symptoms

9

Medical marijuana has been proven to be effective in treating some conditions in children, such as seizures and chemotherapy nausea symptoms. However, the researchers urge caution when administering it to such a young demographic.

medical marijuana, cannabis dispensary

The study was recently published in the Pediatrics journal. In total, the researchers took a detailed look at 22 relevant studies having to do with the use of medical marijuana on minors in order to come to their conclusion.

Specifically, out of the many chemical components it contains, they determined that THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the most abundant cannabinoid the plant contains, improved the nausea and vomiting symptoms for young chemotherapy patients.

Cannabidiol (CBD) was determined to be another chemical of interest. Namely, the researchers determined it has an effect on seizures. Certain advocates of using marijuana in a medical setting have hailed the results of this research as additional proof of its effectiveness, especially in the cases where children haven’t responded well to other forms of traditional treatments.

Paul Armentano, deputy director of NORML, believes that cannabinoids can play a role in pediatric care, according to the results of these programs. This is especially true in cases when the doctors have to treat life-threatening seizures, and medical marijuana allows them to do so in a manner that is safer and more effective than what the conventional methods allow for.

Still, the question remains: is administering medical marijuana to kids and adolescents a good practice?

Even though the results of the study definitely look promising, it should be noted that the treatment is not effective in all cases, at least when it comes to treating other conditions the younger patients are suffering from.

Unfortunately, there does not seem to be a correlation between using medical marijuana for the purposes of treating PTSD, neuropathic pain, or Tourette’s syndrome in young patients. Furthermore, other health organizations have issued a warning that using medical marijuana on this age group represents several health-related risks.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) warned that doing this may introduce certain complications like depression, a weakened motor skill control, mental health issues, and a worse performing memory function.

According to Dr. Shane Shucheng Wong from Harvard’s department of psychiatry and a lead study author, children who keep using recreational marijuana, experience a negative effect on memory, learning, and attention. Furthermore, their problem-solving ability is negatively affected as well. This is especially true for using high-potency cannabis over long periods of time.

Therefore, using the correct dosage of medical marijuana is of utmost importance when it comes to younger patients.

The FDA currently only approves the following two synthesized cannabinoids as medications: nabilone and dronabilone, with both of them used to treat the vomiting and nausea symptoms in children as well as adults.

Dr. Wong said the academy recognizes them as an option for treating debilitating conditions, which includes treating the symptoms of epilepsy conditions.

Another arising challenge is the varying potency and chemical makeup of these products, which makes it that much more challenging to find the dosing suitable for young patients.

Also, depending on the state your kids are being treated in, a signed consent form from a legal guardian (plus the physician) may be required in order to start the treatment.

Smoking Medical Marijuana Could Raise One’s Libido

44

Even though the classical cigarettes are often associated with giving you a certain sex appeal, when it comes to raising one’s libido, the weed may actually take the crown.

smoking medical marijuana, free cannabis

On Friday, the Journal of Sexual Medicine published a study that suggest that people who smoke more weed are more sexually active than those who smoke less of it or none at all. However, it’s still unknown whether this is the cause or the effect.

The findings are based on the survey data of 50,000 participants between the years of 2002 and 2015. According to Dr. Michael Eisenberg, the study’s author and a urologist at Stanford University Medical Center, they reported the frequency of their smoking habits, classifying it as daily, weekly, or monthly. Apart from that, the survey also asked them how often they’ve had sex last month.

Put in concrete terms, those who smoke marijuana, compared to non-smokers, had roughly 20% more sex. Female marijuana smokers had sex 7.1 times a month on average, while the male ones averaged at 6.9. Female non-smokers engaged in sexual activities 6 times a month on average, while the male ones had a monthly average of 5.6 times.

The researchers considered other factors such as alcohol consumption, age, religion, having kids, but the pattern remained the same no matter what group they chose to analyze.

On the other hand, other experts claim that marijuana may not be directly responsible for a heightened sex drive. Mitch Earleywine, a psychologist working at the University at Albany, seems to believe that certain personality types are more inclined towards looking for a thrill or trying out new things. In other words, weed smokers may have certain character traits that make them lustier than non-smokers.

Eisenberg acknowledges the possibility of this being connected to weed directly, arguing it makes individuals more interested in sex. Mentioning another study, he noted that by injecting cannabinoid into the rats, they were able to induce sexual behavior in them.

A study from 2012 made the link between women watching erotic films and a heightened sexual arousal when they had cannabinoids in their system. However, this may be due to heightened sensory experiences overall that are associated with that state.

Whatever the case may be, Eisenberg made a point that, unlike tobacco that is known to depress libido and performance, marijuana certainly doesn’t decrease one’s sex drive.

Overall, there is a lot of conflicting views regarding this issue in the world of science. Dr. Rany Shamloul, an Ottawa Hospital researcher, noted it may be harder to get an erection while under the influence of marijuana. Even though the brain’s sexual arousal frequency may become increased because of it, the erectile function in the male reproductive organ might get decreased.

Another thing that may play a role in cannabis‘ potential as a love enabler is dry mouth, a side effect of frequent usage, and it may not be the only thing that gets dry as a result of it. Ironically, certain lubricants contain THC or cannabinoids.

Medical Marijuana

64

legal medical marijuana dispensary

Following the legalization of Marijuana, many different uses have come to the fore. In addition to it being used for medicinal purposes, there are other ways in which marijuana can be of use to an individual. Alleviating pain is one use that readily comes to mind for many, but it also can be used to treat Glaucoma, vomiting, nausea and muscle relaxation. Even though the drug, when used, is known to cause users to become spasmic and seem spaced out, this does not deter its uses and administration. It effectively works to relieve symptoms and when administered correctly, is effective for what it is prescribed for.

The administration of marijuana for medicinal purposes comes in various forms, pills, vapors, brewed in teas, smoked, added to food or baked products, or in liquid extract. The laws vary by state, but if you are found to be a likely candidate for medical marijuana, then the doctor will prescribe it for you. One of the major side effects of marijuana usage is the inability to function at a normal level. Most studies conducted only involve several users, but it revealed that they suffered from short term memory loss, and a lack of concentration. Dizzyness, weight loss or gain, hallucinations, heart palpitations, low blood pressure, impairment of cognitive and motor skills and many other symptoms were also reported. As it is with other drugs, marijuana, when taken for medical purposes, can be very beneficial when the patient returns from the high it takes them on them on when it is ingested.

Marijuana Over The Years

47

medical marijuana dispensary

Marijuana was once known as the perfect recreational drug and one that was less serious than cocaine, heroin and other recreational drugs. It comes with several different names; cannabis, marijuana, spliff, weed, ganja, Mary Jane weed, grass, dope, herb, pot and joint. The herb has various uses and can treat many symptoms. For this reason, the use of marijuana was made legal in the United States, in a bid to market it as a medicinal drug. Over the years, it has gone from people being arrested for using, to the herb being made available to individuals. Distinguishing between a person’s need for the herb can be somewhat tricky, as even when it is being sought for recreational purposes, it is still be said that it is for medicinal purposes.

Marijuana has evolved over the years to become a more acceptable herb for use in brownies, cookies, cakes and several different drinks. People have become so creative at getting their product sold, that they have completely ignore the fact that using marijuana has a variety of side effects for the individual. Many would prefer to experience the side effects, even if it did not cure the illness, while others would rather not have the after usage effects, but have it treat, or cure their illness. New studies have shown that it is also effective for the treatment of Psychlogical Disorders. The study is geared towards the effect that stress has on the salivary cortisol level in non-cannabis users and users alike.
